Pro Bono Eyecare Fund

Donations to the CERE Pro Bono Eyecare Fund enable OCB physicians to provide eyecare to patients who are unable to afford treatment. OCB physicians provide their services for free. The Fund covers non-OCB costs. Neither OCB nor its physicians profit from this program.

Research and Education Fund

OCB is one of the largest and most experienced providers of eye health care in the nation. Ophthalmologists at OCB are research pioneers in the field of cataract treatment, laser treatment for glaucoma, laser vision correction, and pharma- cological agents for healing. Your contributions to CERE go directly to support this research and education. CERE currently administers more than $500,000 in research grants.

Research Activities

Research activities funded by CERE are devoted to the advancement of ophthalmic medical and surgical care. Recent studies have focused on glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, laser refractive surgery, and diseases of the retina and cornea. Current investigations at CERE focus on the use of lasers in ophthalmic treatment programs, the healing process following eye surgery and the use of ophthalmic pharmaceuticals.

Studies by CERE are performed within the offices of Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston and at the Boston Eye Surgery and Laser Center, both located in Boston, Massachusetts. Collaborative studies are performed with Massachusetts General Hospital, Tufts New England Medical Center, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, the National Institute of Health, and with other national international institutions.

An independent Investigational Review Board (IRB) reviews all proposed research studies to ensure the efficacy and safety of protocols and treatment. IRB approval is required before a new study is conducted.

Fellowships

The Ophthalmology
Fellowship Program at OCB
is designed to develop skilled medical and surgical ophthalmology clinicians and is among the most competitive in the country. OCB, in conjunction with Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and Tufts Medical Center, has trained over 100 fellows in the past 30 years.

In recent years, the Federal government has severely reduced funding for advanced training. Funding from Center for Eye Research and Education and Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston enables OCB to maintain its commitment to training.
